200-Amp Panel Upgrade in Boylston, MA

When a homeowner in Boylston called us last spring, they had the same complaint we hear often: "My breakers keep tripping and I don't know why." After a quick walkthrough, the answer was clear — their 1970s-era 100-amp panel was simply overwhelmed by the demands of a modern home.

Here is how the project unfolded, from the first call to the final inspection.

The Problem: An Undersized Panel

The home was a 1,900-square-foot colonial built in 1972. At the time it was built, a 100-amp service was standard. But over the decades, the family had added central air conditioning, a dishwasher, a second refrigerator in the garage, and a home office with multiple computers and monitors.

The panel was running at near-capacity every day. On evenings when the AC kicked on while someone was cooking and another family member was running the dryer, breakers would trip. It was more than an inconvenience — it was a warning sign.

Signs the panel needed replacing:

  • Breakers tripping two to three times per week
  • Lights dimming when large appliances turned on
  • Warm or discolored outlets near high-draw circuits
  • No room to add circuits for future needs

Our Assessment

We performed a full load calculation on the home. This involves adding up the wattage of every major appliance, lighting circuit, and outlet load to determine the home's actual electrical demand.

The results confirmed what we suspected: the home needed at least 150 amps to run comfortably, and 200 amps to allow for future additions like an EV charger or a hot tub.

We also found two double-tapped breakers — a code violation where two wires share a single breaker slot — and several circuits that were not properly labeled. These are common in older homes and represent both a safety risk and a fire hazard.

The Solution: 200-Amp Service Upgrade

We recommended a full 200-amp service upgrade, which included:

  • New 200-amp main panel with a 40-space breaker box, giving the family room to grow
  • New meter socket coordinated with Eversource for the utility-side connection
  • Replacement of all double-tapped breakers with properly sized individual circuits
  • Arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) breakers on bedroom circuits as required by current Massachusetts electrical code
  • Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection on kitchen, bathroom, and outdoor circuits
  • Full labeling of every circuit in the new panel

The Process

Day 1 — Permit and scheduling: We pulled the electrical permit with the Town of Boylston building department before any work began. This is non-negotiable. Unpermitted electrical work can void your homeowner's insurance and create problems when you sell.

Day 2 — Installation: Our crew arrived at 7:30 AM. Eversource disconnected the utility feed at the meter while we removed the old panel and installed the new one. By early afternoon, the new panel was wired and ready. Eversource reconnected service, and we energized the panel circuit by circuit, testing each one.

Day 3 — Inspection: The Boylston building inspector reviewed the work and issued a certificate of completion. The homeowner now has documentation that the work was done correctly and to code.

Total project time: two days of work plus the inspection.

The Result

The homeowner called us a week after the job to say they had not tripped a single breaker since the upgrade. The lights no longer dim when the AC starts. And they now have 20 open breaker slots for future projects — including the EV charger they are planning to add next year.

"We had been dealing with tripping breakers for years and just thought it was normal. Nieves Electric explained everything clearly, got the permit, and finished the job in a day. We wish we had done this sooner." — Homeowner, Boylston MA

Is Your Panel Due for an Upgrade?

If your home was built before 1990 and you have never had the panel replaced, it is worth having a licensed electrician take a look. Warning signs include:

  • Breakers that trip frequently
  • A panel with fuses instead of breakers
  • A panel brand known for safety issues (Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Pushmatic)
  • No room to add new circuits
  • Plans to add an EV charger, hot tub, or major appliance
